Impeller Replacement On A Leaf Blower

by Jeremy HIPA 11 Jan 2023 0 Comments

This blog is a step-by-step instruction for replacing the impeller on an Echo leaf blower. The most common reason for replacing the impeller is when the engine vibrates excessively.

Replacement

Before you begin the replacement, you need to make sure the engine and muffler have cooled and the on/off switch is in the off position. You also need to remove the wire and boot from the spark plug to prevent the engine from accidentally starting.
Step 1: Remove the blower tube from the blower. Release with a screwdriver and then just pull straight out.
Step 2: Next remove half of the impeller housing. You need to first remove the impeller cover and now you have access to the impeller that is held in place with a single bolt. The problem is if you go to remove that bolt, the entire engine spins and the bolt will never come loose. So what you need to do is bind up the piston. But you need to remove the spark plug first.
Step 3: Then you need to take a piece of starter rope and insert it into the cylinder. The starter rope will bind up between the piston and the top of the cylinder to make it so that the crankshaft can no longer rotate.
Step 4: You can now remove the impeller by unthreading the bolt securing the impeller and then pull the impeller out.
Step 5: Now you can begin reassembly. Install the new impeller , put over the shaft and rotate it till it lines up at the tabs on the back of the holder. Then secure it with the bolt and the washer.
Step 6: Remove the rope from the cylinder and replace the spark plug. Replace the impeller housing first. You need to place the clip that secures the blower tube to the blower and now you just need to line up the two haves of the housing. Secure the housing with the screws. Then slide the blower tube back into place.

With the repair completed, reattach the wire and boot to the spark plug and your leaf blower should be ready for use.
