Clutch Replacement On A String Trimmer

by Jeremy HIPA 01 Dec 2022 0 Comments

This blog is a step-by-step instructions for replacing the clutch on a string trimmer. The most common reasons for replacing the clutch is if the engine won’t start.

Replacement

Before you replace the clutch on your string trimmer, you need to first make sure the engine has cooled and remove the wire and boot from the spark plug to prevent the engine from the accidentally starting.
Step 1: Use a t25 Torx bit to unthread the mounting screw securing the throttle housing. Next loosen the clamp screw and the two screws closet to the trigger. You can now slide the driver shaft out and detach the throttle housing.
Step 2: Remove the screws to release the muffler shield.
Step 3: Remove all of the screws so you can separate the two halves of the engine housing. Use a three-quarter inch deep well socket or a spark plug wrench to help loosen the spark plug, then unthread it.
Step 4: You need to confirm that the piston is in the down position. Then you can insert a cord into the cylinder to prevent the piston from moving.
Step 5: Use a clutch removal tool and a crescent wrench to unthread the old clutch. Next install the new clutch by threading it onto the motor shaft then tighten.
Step 6: Remove the cord from the cylinder and rethread the spark plug. Be careful not to strip the threads by over tightening.
Step 7: Join the two halves of the engine housing together.
Step 8: Rethread all of the screws to secure. Realign the muffler shield and secure it with the screws. Realign the muffler cover and rethread the screws to secure. Reposition the throttle housing and slide the driveshaft through the housing until it locks into place. Rethread the mounting screw then tighten the other screws.
Withe the repair completed, reattach the wire in boot to the spark plug and your string trimmer should be ready for use.
